What is Tai Chi? Tai Chi is an ancient and gentle exercise that originated in China. It involves gentle, flowing movements that are performed in a slow, controlled and relaxed manner. Today Tai Chi is practised throughout the world as a highly effective way to promote better health of body and mind.
The Program Harmony Tai Chi, in conjunction with ADAVIC, is offering an 8 week beginner’s course in Tai Chi, commencing February 10th (7:30-8:30 PM, in Kew). During this 8 week program, you will learn the “first 6 movements” in the Tai Chi for Wellness set. The program is based on the Sun style of Tai Chi, and has been designed by Dr. Paul Lam and a team of medical and Tai Chi experts. (Dr. Lam, a practicing western-trained medical doctor and Tai Chi master for 30 years, is a world leader in the field of Tai Chi for health improvement. His programs are specially designed to be simple, safe, and effective for people of any age and fitness level). Also in this program you will learn the underlying essential principles of Tai Chi, a little of its history, and also some qi-gong (“chi-gong”) breathing exercises.
Participants should wear loose, comfortable clothing and flat shoes suitable for exercise. It is also recommended that you bring a water bottle! To assist with evaluation of the Tai Chi program, participants will be asked to complete a brief questionnaire prior to commencing, and also at the end of the 8-week program.
About the presenter: Fiona Biancotto (Occupational Therapist):
Fiona is an Occupational Therapist who has worked in mental health, general
medical and rehabilitation settings. She is also a qualified tai chi
leader (specialising in Dr Paul Lam’s tai chi for Health Programs) a
mum with 2 teenage children, and an ADAVIC member.
Last September, Fiona experienced a panic attack whilst driving home
after visiting the location where her father died in a boating accident
5 years before. Although she had been outwardly coping with this loss
and many other stresses, Fiona knows now that at that time she had
reached stress “saturation point”. Following the initial panic attack, Fiona began to experience other
anxiety symptoms, particularly when driving. These heightened feelings
motivated Fiona to look into various forms of self-help. One approach was tai chi, and this soon became the focus of Fiona’s
interest as it combines both physical exercise and mental relaxation.
Fiona began participating in tai chi classes and completed a tai chi
leader training course at the Arthritis Foundation of Victoria.
Fiona believes that tai chi has had a significant and lasting effect on
her physical and mental well-being and has been instrumental in
minimising her stress and anxiety symptoms.
One of Fiona’s key philosophies is that we all have the capacity to
actively participate in maintaining and improving our own health. Fiona
firmly believes that learning tai chi is one way we can do this, and it
is her passion to teach this exercise form to others in a safe and
effective way.
